Chlorine is very drying for your hair. When the hair becomes wet with chlorinated water, the hair shafts absorb the chlorine, which strips the hair of its natural lubricant, called sebum. If you swim frequently, the repeated drying can cause your hair's protective cuticles to crack, which leads to split ends and frequent breaking of strands.

Protect your hair before swimming by getting it wet with clean water first, which impregnates the hair shafts and keeps them from absorbing chlorine. You can also coat your hair and scalp with conditioner or oil. A swimming cap offers some protection from chlorinated water, plus it keeps longer hair out of your way while swimming. Wash your hair immediately after swimming to remove as much chlorine as possible.
Swimming in a chlorinated pool can dry out your skin and make it feel tight and itchy because the chlorine strips your skin of its natural oils. People with sensitive skin might even get irritation or a rash from the pool's drying effects. Chlorine also can exacerbate skin conditions like eczema. Protect your skin by applying oil or lotion before swimming. Many types of sunscreen contain oils that protect your skin from water, especially waterproof sunscreen formulated for swimming or heavy physical activity. After swimming, rinse or wash the chlorine from your skin as soon as possible, and use lotion or oil to rehydrate it. Keeping hydrated by drinking water before and after swimming also may help protect your skin.
Green Hair

Hair that takes on a greenish tint from swimming in chlorinated pools is a common phenomenon, especially in blonde and light-haired people. The color isn't caused by the chlorine itself, but by the chlorine's interaction with copper pipes and other metals. The chlorine causes small amounts of metal to enter the water and tint the hair. Once your hair has turned green from swimming, a shampoo designed for swimmers can help remove the color. Protecting your hair before swimming also will help prevent it from turning green.

You might look fabulous in your swimsuit as you dive into that sparkling blue pool, but your frizzy, bleached-out hair is unlikely to thank you later. Between sun exposure and the added chemical scorch of chlorine, summer can be taxing to hair. Take special precautions before and after you swim to prevent chlorine damage and still enjoy an active summer.

Step 1

Wet your hair before swimming, because dry hair has a tendency to soak up more chlorine. Give your hair a good rinse before you dive in.

Step 2

Rinse your hair again once you've gotten out of the pool. Later, shampoo and condition as you normally would. Try a shampoo designed to remove chlorine, which can be helpful but doesn't reverse existing chlorine damage. If you already have some damage, use a hydrating shampoo instead.

Step 3

Give your hair aspirin, which can reduce discoloration from chlorine, according to Heloise in "Good Housekeeping" magazine. Dissolve between six and eight aspirin tablets in a glass of warm water. Run the mixture through your hair, leaving it in for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing.

Step 4

Get your hair trimmed regularly to revitalize your hair's appearance. Chlorine and sun can cause split ends, which definitely add to a damaged look.

Step 5

Forego daily hair washing to allow your hair to build up protective natural oils, which can protect against chlorine. The exception is after you've been swimming, when you'll need to remove chlorine thoroughly.

Warnings
  • Avoid styling with hot hair tools, which adds to the damage caused by chlorine. Use your hairdryer on a cool rather than hot setting.
Tips
  • Eat your way to healthier hair. Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, nuts, tuna and seeds, can bolster your hair's shine factor.
Things You'll Need
  • Shampoo for chlorine removal
  • Hydrating shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Six to eight aspirin
Overview

Swimming in either a chlorinated pool or a natural body of water can wreak havoc on your skin, with many possible irritants lurking in the water. Skin care remedies that minimize discomfort are easy to do at home, and include washing, moisturizing and purifying your skin after each swim session.

Showering and washing your body and hair with soap and warm water is a skin care "must" after swimming. When you get out of a swimming pool, chlorine bonds to your skin, according to British Swimming. Removing the potent chemical can prevent you from breaking out in a rash in response to the irritant. Swimming in the ocean and other bodies of water can also cause skin problems in some people, due to the high salt content of seawater, and algae and other plant life present in lakes and rivers. Wash your swimsuit with soap as well, to avoid skin irritations the next time you put it on.

Swimming pools are routinely shocked with chlorine to kill bacteria to keep you free of infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control, but the chemical can contribute to dry skin. Applying a lotion or cream-based moisturizer to your skin after your post-swim shower can remedy the dryness over time. Over-the-counter products are sufficient for most cases of chlorine-induced dryness. If your skin continues to be irritated after swimming or if you develop flaky patches consistent with eczema, contact your doctor to discuss your treatment options.

Purify SkinDrinking plenty of fresh water helps to purify your skin. Photo CreditJupiterimages/Pixland/Getty Images

Drinking water is another skin care remedy that you can apply not only after swimming, but before you head to the pool as well. Drinking plenty of fresh water helps to purify your skin, replenishes moisture you have lost through sun exposure and flushes out toxins, of which chlorine may be one. British Swimming concurs, stating that your skin is more likely to feel rough and dry if you are dehydrated. Your skin will stay more supple when you are hydrated from the inside out.

Chlorine is the most common water treatment to kill bacteria living within it. Chlorine is added not only to swimming pools, but also is often found in tap water. According to Free Drinking Water.com, most cities within the U.S. treat the city water with chlorine concentrations of two to four parts per million; and they report the average person receives 50 percent of their chlorine exposure from bathing. Chlorinated water can have long-term effects on human skin.
